The Blue of Her Hair, the Gold of Her Eyes by John B. Rosenman. Book coverRachel is happily married and has a rewarding job helping people as a social worker. Then she contracts a mysterious disease which causes everyone, including her husband, to fear and shun her.

Soon her body starts to change in terrifying ways, and people hint and whisper of some horrible, unmentionable affliction that is yet to come. The State contributes to Rachel's alienation by forcing her to wear a blood-red symbol of her disease. This badge warns others of her presence, which everyone views as an abomination.

What will Rachel ultimately become and turn into? Perhaps even more important, can she survive and find a new sense of identity and belonging amid the terror of her transformation?

This book won Preditor's and Editor's 2011 Reader's Poll in the SF and Fantasy short story category.
