The "Sports Action Series" is a 6 book sports-literacy picture book series.

Author's Notes

The genuine inherent value in the "Sports Action Series" is the unique mix of popular sports with a reading development message and a engaging forum for parents and care-givers to support a child's overall and on-going literacy development. This is particularly important for young boys as they can be at-risk for difficulty early on in their literacy development.

Are there things a parent can do to positively influence the development of reading and literacy skills in their children? The answer is a definitive, YES!  While there are many things we do naturally as we engage with our children, there are 4 critical skill sets that contribute to a child's overall reading development. Parents can reinforce these skills simply by being more aware of these 4 important building blocks of creating a new reader. The "Sports Action Series" affords such an opportunity with it's special page format and the Literacy Guide that shows what I call the "4 essential Building Blocks of Reading" These are developmental in order from 1 to 4. and are arranged ina one page chart for easy reference for parents. 
The 4 Building Blocks are ...

1- Oral Language development - (Speech)
Speaking aloud and expressing ideas and thoughts builds oral language skills and provides an essential foundation for the development of reading.

2- Letter and Sound Recognition -
An essential pre-reading skill is recognising all the letters (upper and lower case) of the alphabet and the sounds that they make.

3- Building Word Vocabulary-
An important reading skill development is the ability to visually identify words, to recognise the grouping of letters and to remember the word meaning.

4- Reading Fluency and Comprehension -
Developing the ability to read words accurately and understand their meaning at the same time produces a fluent and competent reader.

The special literacy page format, (red letters & Blue words) and the Literacy Guide illustrating the 4 Building Blocks of Reading, are both handy companion resources. Parents, grandparents, care-givers and adult-male role models can use these resources, as they see fit, to help guide and motivate children with their reading development, before, during or after reading and enjoying the stories.
